The Community Corrections community mourns the loss of Tom Berry, long time director of Hilltop House in Durango, Colorado. Tom died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, as the result of a June 15th car accident outside of Durango.
Tom was passionate in his work and generous with his time in his quest to make the world a better place to live. During his 20 plus years in the industry, Tom made many lasting contributions in our field. He served on the first Governor’s Advisory Council on Community Corrections, which convened on June 1, 1986. While on the Council, Tom served on the committee that created the first edition of the Colorado Community Corrections Standards in July of 1988. Tom was also a two-time chairman of the Colorado Community Corrections Coalition. Tom retired from Hilltop House in 2002 to take on a new challenge by becoming a national facilitator and trainer for teens and families in crisis.
There was a memorial service for Tom on July 6th in a crowed Louisville Methodist Church. Those in attendance besides friends and family were many representatives from the Coalition and the Criminal Justice field. A celebration service is planned for late July in Durango. He will be missed by ComCor and the the Community Corrections community.
